Bonnie Schneider
After completing having a Bachelor of Music (Boston University in 1963) and then observing broad-based education as a professor (Brown University, 1971-1975) and am a strong believer of an integrated approach to learning that includes the study of music alongside the study of other disciplines. This is not a surprise since the ethnomusicologist, who holds a doctorate and an MA from UCLA is keen on the arts. My ethnomusicology program, which began in 1975 at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is conveniently located in the music department at a College of Letters and Science. The possibility of pursuing multiple interests is something I really appreciate. It is a great pleasure to be able to impart knowledge and expertise to graduate and undergraduate students. I am the writer of 3 books, Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing the Music of Expressing Culture. Thereafter, I'll switch between periods of primarily academic tasks and periods of administrative tasks (I was Chair of the Department of Music from 1983 to 1988, Dean for undergraduate Advising between 1992 and 1998, as well as Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans from 1994 to 1998; Chair of the Group of Asian Studies from 1999, and now am back as Chair of the Department of Music).
